Girls´Day at IPS

How does a “chocolate kiss” behave in a vacuum - just one of the questions answered at this year's Girls' Day

On April 23, 2026, 9 highly motivated and inquisitive girls visited the IPS and the KIT Light Source. The IPS (this year with support from INE) offered the workshop “Zwischen Physik und Technik – Arbeiten im Beschichtungslabor” within the german-wide event “Girls’Day – Mädchenzukunftstag”, giving insight into technical and scientific job profiles related to vacuum science, materials characterization, and crystal growth.

With hands-on experiments, the girls were introduced to the power of vacuum and found out how to blow up chocolate kisses without touching them. They learned that crystals are special but also quite common, and that outside appearance is not everything.

We were impressed by the active participation and quick thinking of the girls, and we thank them for their wonderful visit!
